The alarm went off early this morning, but I was already awake, listening. You develop a sixth sense about hatch day—that anticipation that builds as day 17 approaches, the way you find yourself checking the incubator more frequently, watching for those first tiny cracks that signal the miracle is beginning.
Today, 40 baby quail made their grand entrance into the world.

Hatch Day Magic
There’s nothing quite like the sound of a successful hatch in progress. The gentle peeping from inside the incubator, the soft scratching sounds of tiny feet finding their footing, the rustle of movement as wet chicks fluff up and discover they have wings. By mid-morning, the incubator was alive with the chaos of new life.
Forty little balls of fluff, each no bigger than a large marble, stumbling around on oversized feet and peeping with all the indignation of creatures who’ve just been evicted from their cozy eggs. Their eyes bright and alert, already looking for food, water, and warmth—basic survival instincts that never cease to amaze me.
From Incubator to Brooder
The transition from hatching chamber to brooder is always a delicate operation. Each chick needs to be carefully moved, ensuring they’re completely dry and steady on their feet. At just hours old, these tiny creatures are surprisingly mobile, already demonstrating that incredible quail energy that will define their personalities.
Setting up the brooder becomes a ritual of preparation: fresh bedding, clean waterers positioned at exactly the right height, starter feed scattered to encourage natural foraging behavior, and heat lamps adjusted to create that perfect temperature gradient from warm to slightly cooler zones.

Forty Tiny Personalities
Within hours of hatching, individual personalities start to emerge. There’s always the bold explorer who immediately starts investigating every corner of the brooder. The cautious one who stays close to the heat source. The vocal one who seems to narrate every discovery with enthusiastic peeping. And the sleepy one who finds the perfect spot and settles in for a nap.
Watching them discover basic life skills is endlessly entertaining. The first tentative sips of water, often followed by surprised head-shaking. The instinctive pecking at anything that might be food, including each other’s toes. The sudden group movements where all 40 chicks seem to decide simultaneously to relocate to a different corner of the brooder.
The Numbers Game
Forty successful hatches from this batch represents a solid hatch rate—something to be proud of in the world of incubation. Each of these chicks beat the odds that work against every developing embryo: proper temperature maintenance, adequate humidity, successful positioning for hatching, and the mysterious alchemy that turns a fertile egg into a living, breathing bird.
Not every egg makes this journey. Incubation is part science, part art, and part hope. When you see 40 healthy chicks peeping and moving around the brooder, you’re witnessing the successful culmination of weeks of careful temperature and humidity management.
Growing Fast
These little ones won’t stay marble-sized for long. Quail grow at an almost alarming rate, doubling and tripling their size within weeks. In just a few days, they’ll outgrow this brooder setup. Within weeks, they’ll be developing their adult feathers. In just a couple of months, some of these chicks could be producing eggs of their own.
For now, though, they’re perfect in their tiny fluffiness—40 small miracles that represent the continuation of our quail program and the endless fascination of watching new life find its footing in the world.
