While our laying hens are settling into their permanent fortress, we’re taking a completely different approach for our meat birds. We started working on a chicken tractor for the broilers today, and it’s exciting to see this mobile housing concept taking shape. This isn’t just another construction project—it’s our entry into sustainable, pasture-based poultry production.
A Different Philosophy
The chicken tractor represents a fundamental shift in how we approach broiler management. Instead of keeping meat birds in a fixed location where they quickly exhaust the ground resources and create waste management challenges, this mobile system will allow us to give them fresh pasture daily while naturally fertilizing our land in the process.
The concept is beautifully simple: a lightweight, portable shelter that can be moved regularly to provide broilers with continuous access to fresh grass, insects, and clean ground. The chickens get variety in their diet and environment, while the pasture benefits from their natural fertilization and pest control services.
Construction Progress
We’re about halfway done with the frame construction, and already the advantages of this design are becoming clear. The structure needs to be sturdy enough to provide secure housing while remaining light enough for regular movement across the pasture. It’s a balancing act between durability and portability that’s proving to be an interesting engineering challenge.
The frame is taking shape nicely, with careful attention to creating a structure that will withstand regular handling and movement while providing adequate space for a small group of broilers to live comfortably throughout their growing period.

Still Need the Essentials
Need wire and roof and should be ready for some birds. Those two remaining components are crucial for making this tractor functional. The wire will provide security from ground predators while allowing the birds direct access to grass and insects. The roof will offer weather protection and shade while keeping aerial predators at bay.
Once those elements are in place, we’ll have a complete mobile broiler system that can be moved daily or as needed to keep the birds on fresh ground throughout their production cycle.
Sustainable Production Goals
This chicken tractor represents our commitment to producing meat in a way that benefits both the animals and the land. Pastured broilers have access to a more natural diet, more space to express natural behaviors, and a constantly changing environment that keeps them engaged and healthy.
From a land management perspective, the regular movement prevents overuse of any single area while distributing the fertility benefits across multiple pasture sections. It’s regenerative agriculture in action—using animals to improve the land rather than degrading it.
Learning Curve
Building a chicken tractor involves different considerations than permanent housing. Weight distribution, structural integrity under movement, ease of access for daily management, and efficient handling for regular relocation all need to be factored into the design.
Each design decision needs to balance the needs of the birds, the requirements of the management system, and the practical realities of moving this structure regularly across varying terrain. It’s a fascinating puzzle that’s teaching us a lot about both construction and animal husbandry.
The Mobile Advantage
Once operational, this chicken tractor will give us the flexibility to utilize different areas of our property for broiler production. We can move the birds to areas that need fertilization, away from crops that might be damaged by chicken activity, or simply to provide them with the freshest, most nutritious ground available.
This mobility also allows us to better integrate broiler production with other farm activities, using the chickens as a tool for land improvement rather than just as livestock requiring dedicated space.
Almost Ready
With the frame nearing completion, we’re getting excited about loading this tractor with its first group of broilers. The combination of secure housing, fresh pasture access, and daily movement should create ideal growing conditions for healthy, happy meat birds.
Wire and roof installation, and we’ll be in business. Sometimes the most important farm infrastructure comes in the form of simple, clever solutions rather than complex permanent structures.
